Glasgow was again a host city for the start of the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique and a number of local runs for classic vehicles. The cars departed once more from Paisley Abbey. This image shows a green 1966 MGB – JKE 61D – parked up in the starting area.

Any additional information clarifying the vehicle’s make, model, modifications made and its specific history will be welcomed.

Paisley has launched a bid to become the UK City of Culture in 2021.

Facel Vega HK500 – 1959

Perico001 has added a photo to the pool:

Facel Vega HK500 - 1959

In its relatively short life, the French firm of Facel produced approximately 2,900 cars, all of which were stylish, luxurious and fast. From being chiefly engaged in the supply of car bodies to Panhard, Simca and Ford France, Facel branched out into automobile manufacture in its own right in 1954 with the launch of the Vega at the 1954 Paris Salon. A luxurious Grand Routier, the Vega took its name from the brightest star in the Lyra constellation and featured supremely elegant coupé bodywork welded to a tubular-steel chassis. There being no suitable French-built power unit, Facel turned to the USA for the Vega’s, that chosen initially being Chrysler’s 4,5-litre, 180 bhp V8, while there was a choice of push-button automatic or manual transmission.

An improved model, the HK500, appeared in 1957. Maximum power was now around 360 bhp courtesy of the latest, 5,9-litre version of Chrysler’s ‘hemi’ V8 and top speed rose to around 140 mph. Power steering became an option and Dunlop disc brakes were adopted as standard equipment in 1960. Capable of effortless and virtually silent 120mph cruising, the HK500 possessed, according to The Motor, ‘a brilliant combination of good comfort and quite exceptional roadholding.’ HK 500 production amounted to a mere 500-or-so units between 1958 and 1961, and today this rare Franco-American Grande Routière is highly sought after.
This right-hand drive car was supposed to be supplied to the HWM dealership in the UK, but ended up being delivered new in France to Société A Carle, Paris on 11th May 1959. The original registration was ‘2114 JA 75’, and the car was delivered with the optional Pont-à-Mousson manual gearbox, chromed Rudge wheels, and disc brakes.

On 27th January 1961, the Facel was sold to a motor dealer in Paris 16 (Paris Cannes Automobiles). Later in 1961, the car was sold to Société SADAM in Metz and reregistered as ‘840 JS 57’. There are invoices on file for SADAM’s period of ownership dating from 18th April 1961 to 24th September 1965.

From 1972 to 2004, the Facel was in Alsace, France with various owners, including Mr Pierre Marie Knoll, who sold it to the current vendor in 2004. Between 2011 and 2012 the car was restored (exterior and interior) by Espace Century of Wissous, France. Finished in white with contrasting red leather interior, this stunning, rare, and desirable HK500 is offered with invoices and photographs of the restoration, French Carte Grise, and ‘Amicale Facel’ certificate.

Delage D8 Cabriolet – 1930

Perico001 has added a photo to the pool:

Delage D8 Cabriolet - 1930

Coachwork by Figoni
Chassis n° 33783

In its day, the Delage D8 was the only French car which could be mentioned in the same breath as the 32 CV Hispano-Suiza in terms of elegance and engineering excellence, while the Delage factory at Courbevoie was the most modern in the French industry, equipped with the finest tools that money could buy.

Founded in 1905 by Louis Delage, the company had commenced production with a single-cylinder De Dion-engined runabout and within a few years was offering multi-cylinder designs. The publicity value of racing was recognised right from the start, a single-cylinder Delage winning the Coupe Des Voiturettes as early as 1908 and Louis himself taking the 1911 Coupe de l’Auto in a 3,0-litre four-cylinder. Victories at the Grand Prix du Mans and the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race were achieved prior to WWI, the company going on to become a major force in Grand Prix racing in the 1920s and setting a new World Land Speed Record mark in 1924 with a 10,7-litre V12.

Four-cylinder DI and six-cylinder DM models formed the mainstay of touring car production in the 1920s and then at the 1929 Paris Salon Delage launched the Maurice Gaultier-designed D8. A magnificent 4.0-litre overhead-valve straight eight featuring an X-braced chassis and servo-assisted braking, the D8 was destined to attract the creative attentions of Europe’s finest coachbuilders. ‘This thoroughbred of engineering was given outstanding coachwork by Chapron, Figoni, Letourneur et Marchand, Saoutchik, Labourdette, Vanden Plas, Freestone & Webb, Barker, Pourtout, Fernandez & Darrin; they all wanted to show what they could do with it,’ observed William Stobbs in his book Les Grandes Routières – France’s Classic Grand Tourers. The impressive list of D8 owners included King Gustav V of Sweden, King Alexander of Yugoslavia, and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as well as leading businessmen, politicians, and film stars of the day. For those of more modest means, there were the 14 hp DS and 17 hp D6 six-cylinder models; the latter in effect a D8 minus two cylinders.
Along with many other manufacturers of quality cars, Delage was badly affected by the economic downturn of the early 1930s. Despite a favourable reception for its new range, Automobiles Delage went into receivership in April 1935 and shortly thereafter was taken over by Delahaye. From then onwards Delages were built to Delahaye designs but retained their own superior short-stroke engines and hydraulic brakes.

A Series C example on the 3,3 m wheelbase, chassis number ‘33783’ was delivered on 20th October 1930 to the UK Delage concessionaire, J Smith & Co Ltd. Figoni records show that ‘33783’ carried body number ‘994’, a four-seater ‘faux cabriolet’ that cost 25.500 francs. Expert opinion is that this body was subsequently extensively restyled along more modern lines – a not uncommon occurrence – arriving in the form we see it today some time later in the 1930s.

The next known reference to ‘33783’ dates from 1974, when the VSCC’s Delage Section noted that the owner at that time was one ‘P Heath’ in ‘Southern France or Spain’. By the early 1990s, the Delage had passed to Gérard Sambucchi of Nice, France where it was registered as ‘1930 XV 06’. The current registration, ‘924 PDN 75’, dates from 2002 when the car was owned by Jacques Lafond. While in Mr Lafond’s possession the Delage was sent to J L Bonnefoy of Orval, France for restoration, which took from 2004 to 2006. The chassis and drive train were rebuilt, and the body’s timber framework completely refurbished. The accompanying file of restoration photographs includes some showing original wood in the cowl and rear of the body. Comparing these to photographs taken in the early 1990s (on file), it is evident that the doors have been lengthened and the convertible hood modified appropriately, as it now fits neatly inside the boot. Finished in grey-green with black wings and a contrasting brown leather interior, the Delage is undeniably handsome and a credit to its restorer. The present owner acquired this beautifully restored Delage in 2009. Equally suited to continental touring or the concours lawn, this elegant D8 cabriolet will turn heads wherever it appears.

Iso Rivolta IR 300 - 1967

Coachwork by Bertone
797 ex.

Bubblecar manufacturer Iso joined the ranks of supercar constructors in 1962 with the launch of the Giotto Bizzarrini-designed Rivolta coupé at the Turin Motor Show. Renzo Rivolta’s Isothermos company had begun life pre-war making refrigerators, turning to the manufacture of scooters, under the Iso name, after the war and thence to the highly successful Isetta bubblecar. Interviewed recently for Octane magazine (issue 151) Renzo’s son Piero recalled that his father liked fast cars but could not find one that really suited him; one that was fast, comfortable and reliable. ‘He decided that Iso should produce a fast car that was genuinely useable every day, and priced somewhere between a Jaguar and a Ferrari.’ The result was the Rivolta.

Styled at Carrozzeria Bertone by Giorgetto Giugiaro and powered by a 327 ci (5,4-litre) Chevrolet V8 engine, the four-seat Rivolta employed a steel platform chassis featuring independent front suspension, a De Dion rear axle and disc brakes all round. Iso’s first supercar set the pattern for those that followed: Bizzarrini-designed chassis, Bertone coachwork and Chevrolet engines, its future developments including the long-wheelbase, Ghia-styled Fidia four-door saloon, the muscular, short-wheelbase Grifo and the Rivolta-replacement Lele. Iso’s most successful model, the Rivolta was produced up to 1970, by which time a total of 797 cars had been built.

This beautifully presented IR 300 was delivered new in 1968 to a pharmaceutical company based in Milan, and they would keep the car until 1973 when it passed to its second owner, a resident of the nearby province of Bergamo. He sold the car in 1978 to its third custodian, resident in Presezzo in the same province, where it would remain until 2007. Some two years ago an enthusiast in southern Italy purchased the Iso and had it restored. This Grand Touring coupé now presents beautifully in light blue metallic with black vinyl interior, while the 327 ci Chevrolet engine, coupled with the manual gearbox, provides effortless power. A rare Italian-US hybrid that has always stayed in Italy.

Coachwork by Park Ward

31 ex. (S1 – Park Ward – DHC LHD)

Described by The Autocar as, ‘A new stage in the evolution of the post-war Bentley,’ the magnificent Continental sports saloon has been synonymous with effortless high speed cruising in the grand manner since its introduction on the R-Type chassis in 1952. With the arrival of the final generation of six-cylinder cars, the all-new Silver Cloud and Bentley S-Type, the Continental lost some of its individuality but none of its exclusivity. Eulogising about Bentley’s new ‘S’ Series cars, introduced in April 1955, The Autocar wrote, ‘the latest Bentley model offers a degree of safety, comfort and performance that is beyond the experience and perhaps even the imagination of the majority of the world’s motorists.’

Later, in October that same year, the Bentley Continental became available on the ‘S’ chassis. ‘It brings Bentley back to the forefront of the world’s fastest cars,’ Autocar said of the H J Mulliner-styled fastback, which was the quickest four/five-seater saloon of its day. The Bentley S-Type’s new box-section chassis incorporated improved brakes and suspension and an enlarged (to 4.887 cc) and more powerful version of the existing inlet-over-exhaust six-cylinder engine, which for the first time was identical in specification in its Rolls and Bentley forms. The Continental version came with shorter radiator and higher gearing and, for a time at least, could be ordered with right-hand change manual transmission. As had been the case with the original R-Type, the new S-Type Continental was only ever available as a coachbuilt car; the designs produced by independent coachbuilders for the S1 Continental chassis being among era’s the most stylish.

Of the 431 Bentley S1 Continentals produced between 1955 and 1959, 185 were bodied by Rolls-Royce’s in-house coachbuilder, Park Ward Ltd, of which 63 were left-hand drive. One of only 31 left-hand drive drophead coupés made, chassis number ‘BC30LCH’ was via retailed via Garage de l’Athenée of Paris, France and delivered new in July 1957 to George Embiricos. The Bentley was registered in the UK as ‘TXF 917’, and on 16th August 1957 was shipped to France aboard the ‘SS Dinard’, travelling from Dover to Boulogne.

George A Embiricos was a Greek shipping magnate whose family had owned numerous Bentleys over the years, commencing when the company was still run by the great W O Bentley himself. An aficionado of quality motor cars, George Embiricos was also a noted connoisseur of fine art, owning several masterpieces by El Greco, Goya, Cézanne, Kandinsky, Picasso, van Gogh, and Francis Bacon. The accompanying copy chassis card records George A Embiricos as owner, with company addresses at Dunster House, London EC3 and 29 Broadway, New York City. According to the factory records, the Continental was finished in Sand over Sable with beige leather interior and matching convertible hood. Special features included power steering, an ‘mph’ speedometer, Marchal headlamps, fog/winking lights, Dunlop whitewall tyres, deep amber tail lamps, and a ‘Made in England’ name plate.

In early 1970, by which time it had covered 90.762 miles, the Bentley was purchased by Mr Tom Mix, owner of Foreign Motors West, an authorised Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz franchise. Mr Mix was an avid automobile collector and intended to keep the Continental for the rest of his life, which in fact he did. The car had been re-sprayed blue at some time during the original owner’s stewardship, while in the late 1980s/early 1990s the convertible top was renewed using correct materials.

In August 2001, Mr Mix passed away, and his substantial collection of automobiles was disposed of by his widow. ‘BC30LCH’ was sold to its third owner, Mr M H van Son, the current vendor. (Some documents record the owner’s name as ‘Joseph Bendowski’, who is CEO of the vendor’s company, Van Son Holland Inc of America, and handled the purchase on his behalf).

The Bentley had seen only limited use during Mr Mix’s 40-or-so years of ownership, and the odometer reading of circa 106.000 miles, though undocumented, is believed correct. After purchasing the car, the vendor immediately sent it to marque specialists P&A Wood for a thorough inspection and any required remedial works to be carried out (see detailed invoices totalling circa £ 55.000 on file).

Since then the Continental has formed part of the vendor’s private collection of Bentley motor cars. He has driven the car on long holiday journeys, covering approximately 14.000 miles in eight years, and advises us that it is wonderful to drive and has never had any technical problems. The Continental has been maintained annually by the vendor’s personal mechanic, who is a Bentley specialist. Presented in beautiful condition, this sublime Bentley Continental drophead coupé comes with a genuine owner’s manual, full tool kit (in good condition), Swiss registration papers, and the aforementioned documentation.
